Helpful Definitions

o   Resilience/Resiliency

  • The process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress (American Psychological Association, 2020)

o   Self-Care

  • Providing adequate attention to one’s own physical and psychological wellness (Beauchamp & Childress, 2001)
  • Self-Care Examples:
    • Intentional movement such as a walk or jog
    • Journaling
    • Meditation
    • Enjoying nature
    • Creating artwork
    • Doing a puzzle
    • Taking a nap
    • Asking for help with tasks
    • Setting boundaries

o   Trauma

  • An event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2019)
